Wittmann Kirchspiel Riesling GG 2020
The Kirchspiel grand cru site opens toward the Rhine like an amphitheatre. Its southern and southeast exposure protects the vines from cold westerly winds – and accounts for the excellent microclimate of the vineyard. The soil structure is similar to that of the Morstein site, marked by clayish marl interspersed with limestone. Limestone is the predominant component of the subsoil, too.
Very ripe and very fine peach and citrus fruit, but the complex herb and spice notes are even more intense. Tightly wound and very pristine for this rather warm region, the spice returning at the super-long finish. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2023. 97 points. The 2020 Kirchspiel GG opens very clear, bright and chalky on the spicy, Chablis-like nose that indicates a lovely complex Riesling from limestone rocks. Juicy, round and intense on the palate, this is a mouthful of wine with fine tannins and a generous nature. The finish is salty and vital, very long and complex and indicates great aging potential. Tasted in Wiesbaden at the end of August 2021. 94 points. Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate September 2021
Very fine on the nose, which features elements of ripe green fruit, lemon zest and a gentle chalky mineral aroma. Quite broad, but also very lively on the palate with just a tiny remnant of CO2. Generous fruit with an exotic leaning which includes a fraction of bitter-orange piquancy. Healthy but not prominent acidity and rich texture take care of a harmonious balance. 18/20 Michael Schmidt, jancisrobinson.com August 2021
