Vietti Barolo Lazzarito 2020
The one wine from Serralunga - so you are expecting extra darkness, power and tannin: and you get it: WOW! Licorice intensity with dark red and black fruits. Long and loaded with strength, complexity and intensity. Add to that some underlying dark mofo, black rind thing - can't explain. Then notes of baked earth. Back to a super complex finish of rich fruit acid and tannin. My favourite of the tasting. Ian Cook, FWC.
Lazzarito stands out as one of the strongest wines in this portfolio of new releases from Vietti. With fruit from Serralunga d'Alba, the 2020 Barolo Lazzarito comes in at a very high threshold in terms of complexity, offering dark cherry, creme de cassis, violet macaron, dried herb and lavender. The wine's perfumes remind me of the south of France in summer. It shows elegant tannins, streamlined intensity and good acidity. 96+ points, Drink 2026-2045, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate.
From Serralunga, the 2020 Barolo Lazzarito displays more sapidity on opening, with aromas of fresh sage, balsamic herbs, preserved strawberries, and tea leaf. Medium-bodied, it is more structured, with broad shoulders, ripe tannins and a more grounding sensibility without being heavy. It shows more savoury richness, although is light on its feet. 96 points, drink 2026-2046, Audrey Frick, JebDunnuck.com.
