Poggerino Chianti Classico 2021
Mid-to-deep ruby. Great purity on the nose. Bags of cherry fruit with savoury, minerally touches. Long, intense and concentrated and with bags of polished tannins that never dominate the fruit. Fantastic, perfumed length. Drink 2023-2030. 17/20 Points. Walter Speller, jancisrobinson.com.
Piero Lanza is one of Chianti's finest artisans, and Fattoria Poggerino is one of the region's most progressive estates, with intensive vineyard work at its core. He farms organically, and incorporates some biodynamic practices. The vineyards have been meticulously reworked over the years, with underperforming vines removed and replaced with considered clonal selections, amongst other adjustments. Poggerino is in the zone of Radda in Chianti, which Lanza calls some of the region's most prized territory: “Radda, to me, is a place that allows me to make unique wines… You can be a great winemaker, but without a great terroir it’s hard to make truly exceptional wine… The wines we produce here in Radda have a richness and concentration of fruit, acidity and tannin that are all their own.”
