Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2007
$170
After the mighty St Henri, 389 is my favourite Penfolds wine. This is a surprisingly good result from an indifferent vintage. Puts me in mind of the 1997 vintage, maybe, only better.
Roasted coconut and vanilla, dark berries, aniseed/mint – good smelling wine and typically Penfolds. It’s mid-weight with meaty toasty flavours and nice set of lightly chewy tannins (good work done here). Well balanced and good to drink (even now) with a toasty savoury finish. It’s a wine that delivers a lot of satisfaction and plenty of 389ishness (to coin a new phrase). Played well, done good. Top result. 93 Points. Gary Walsh, The Wine Front (2010).
