Nanny Goat 'Super Nanny' Pinot Noir 2022
36% Queensberry, 26% Pisa, 26% Bannockburn, 12% Bendigo Vineyards.
On the nose, vivid bursts of raspberry, red rose petal, dark chocolate, black tea, dried earth and peat smoke dance around a brooding core of black and blue berry fruits, evolving with each swirl of the glass. The density of the nose belies the delicate, light-footed precision of the palate – a crisp bead of acidity punctuating the enveloping silkiness of beautifully ripe tannins. Red currants, damson plum, raspberry, damp earth and sweet baking spice all work in perfect harmony, slowly fading to shadows on a tantalisingly bright finish.
Comprised of only the finest select parcels of fruit identified for their distinctive colour, flavour and structural properties. Carefully hand harvested and gently destemmed into small open top fermenters retaining a large proportion of whole berries alongside 20% whole bunch, the fruit is allowed to undergo a natural fermentation and extended post ferment maceration for a total of 30 – 32 days on skins before pressing to 225L French Oak barrels (25% New) where it is matured for 14 months. Bottled without fining or filtration to ensure the beauty we see in the vineyard is reflected in the finished wine. Winery Note.

I was lucky enough to attend the Fourth Biennial Nanny Goat Benchmark tasting in August (2024). Nanny Goat puts these events as a benchmarking exercise and compares their own releases against a flight on pinot noirs from all over the world. The Super Nanny was in the 'Best of the Best' category and was up against such wines as Premier Cru Burgundy from Chambolle, a premium Californian pinot noir and even one of the best pinot noir's from Tasmania. The Super Nanny was universally acclaimed as not only the best wine in the flight but also the wine of the day by wine industry attendees.
A blend of 2 parcels from the Pisa (63%) and Queensberry (37%) vineyards, the nose is very appealing and lifted with broody black plums, dark florals and baking spices. On the palate there's a great concentration of fruit that with elements of clove and spice and a mineral undertow that sits behind. Alan and the team at Nanny Goat have managed to keep all the pieces in place with so much power and elegance in equal measures, a terrific example of a structured and full bodied Otago Pinot Noir, Cameron Roebuck, FWC.
