Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon 2019
My favourite Cabernet Sauvignon in all of Australia. Cellars magnificently for 10 -20 years + Ian Cook - FWC
A deep and alluring nose of plum, damp earth, bay leaf and pencil shavings introduces Moss Wood's 2019 Cabernet. The palate is true to the form of recent vintages, being more open-knit and approachable when compared to the other flagship producer of Margaret River in Cullen 'Diana Madeline' which is a touch more unforgiving in its youth. Here, Moss Wood offers up a medium bodied palate where earth, fruit, dried brown leaf and more wood shavings/pencil shavings intertwine quite effortlessly. There is a slight degree of austerrity on the back palate which is inherent to the grape variety and often seen in wine of this young age. The fresh acid makes itself known in the back half of the wine which will hold the wine in good stead if you're planning on tucking some away in the cellar. Another great Moss Wood, for sure. - Ches Cook, FWC.
Generally, contrary to many, I tend to favour 2019 Margaret Cabernet over 2018. I bit more brooding, dense, tight, ‘minerally’, and all that.
Powerful, compact, brooding sort of style, but tight too, all black fruit, dark chocolate, a seasoning of bay leaf and baking spice, some floral notes peeping over the top. Tannin is earthy and dense, but smooth and layered, boysenberry and dark raspberry, firm acidity set neatly inside, and a tobacco and black olive savoury finish of length and intensity. A very strong release, indeed maybe the best in the last decade. High drinkability, even early. Drink 2027-2043+. 96 Points. Gary Walsh, The Wine Front.
