Massolino Margheria Barolo 2019
It’s a chalky vineyard with plenty of sand. This brings elegance! I am totally seduced by the perfume. It happens every year. Perfume – how to describe it in this wine – rose petal, sage and other herbs (Henschke gets this in Hill of Grace) orange zest (love it) menthol, red licorice. All the structure of Serralunga is there, yet the perfume also exists on the palate and keeps the wine lighter on it’s feet than the other Cru’s. Super refined, with soft tannins. The tannins in 2019 Massolino are certainly there yet finer and softer. The fruit sweetness runs all the way on a very long finish. My WOW wine. Ian Cook, FWC.
“The 2019 Barolo Margheria is a classic Serralunga Barolo. Deep, savory and wonderfully complex, the Margheria offers up a compelling mix of red/purplish fruit, sage, menthol, licorice, dried flowers, graphite and melted road tar. Muscular tannins wrap it all together. The 2019 is seriously impressive.” 96 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous.
“Rich, cherry, liquorice root, rose petal, a little clay and almond. Full-bodied, but such a lovely carriage and weight, succulent, so much flesh to tannin, kind of meaty and earthy, with some sage and dried herb, and a long charcoal laced finish. It has some sap and energy too, and a spicy aftertaste. I like the ‘mineral’ component of this wine too, though I feel Parafada has the edge on it in 2019, though of course they are both equally valid and different expressions of Serralunga.” 95+ points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front.
