Kir-Yianni Assyrtiko Amyndeon The North 2025
100% Assyrtiko from Amynndeon near Macedonia in North East Greece.
A new discovery following a Greek masterclass showcasing a number of wines, this wine was 1 of 2 stand out wines from the producer Kir-Yianni.
From Amyndeon in the North of Greece (near Macedonia) where Xinomavro has its home, there’s quite a bit of elevation here and the vines are grown at 600-700m elevation on sandy soils.
Fermented in stainless steel, it spends 4 months on lees to provide some texture.
A real contrast stylistically to the Assyrtiko's that you tend to see from Santorini which made the wine so appealing.
Lifted Citrus, Green Apple, floral with some peach and apricot sitting behind. On the palate there's so much energy and freshness with a saline and mineral edge, I was especially drawn to the lightness of this wine, it lacks the broad shoulders and alcohol you tends to see with this varietal from the hotter and drier islands.
Thoroughly recommended as an alternative to your summer drinking, fantastic value at this price point. Cameron Roebuck, FWC.
