Felsina Chianti Classico 2021
An outstanding Chianti from the 2021 vintage - highly recommended
The vineyards for this entry Chianti Classico (100% Sangiovese) are located in Castelnuovo Beradenga to the south-east of Siena. The majority of the vineyards have a south-west exposure at an altitude of 320-420 metres above sea level on predominately rock quartz and calcareous (limestone) alberese mixed with alluvial pebbles on the higher elevation and sandstone and loam on the lower elevations. These soils along with their exposure lead to wines that have primary fruit and freshness to enjoy now but also the structure to age. Felsina is known for making Chianti’s with a signature brightness and a savoury charm.
On the nose the wine has lots of bright red cherry along with notes of rosemary and earth. On the palate its medium bodied with an appealing sour cherry note, minerality and there’s a bitter herb edge on the finish. Its lively and salivating acidity adds a real freshness to the wine and together with its chalky tannin means there’s an ample structure in place. All the key elements of fruit, acidity and tannin are in balance, it’s got some good fruit length as well and it’s a great example of when Chianti Classico is done well. Super enjoyable drinking on its own but a natural match with any tomato-based dish. Cameron, FWC
