Comte Liger-Belair La Romanee Grand Cru 2020
No Romanee Conti in stock, but one beautiful bottle from it's neighbour, on the high side. WOW - I wish i was wealthy. Ian Cook
La Romanée Grand Cru 2020
The 2020 La Romanée Grand Cru showed a little reduction on the entry. This takes time to unfurl on the nose, luscious black cherries, blueberry, pressed violet and orange blossom. There is a sensuality here that I think distinguishes it from its famous adjacent fellow monopole. The palate is medium-bodied is very well balanced with firm backbone. Dense and imbued with a precise silver thread of acidity, this La Romanée comes armed with a sense of symmetry towards the finish with a long, slightly peppery aftertaste. Regal.

A gorgeously spiced nose is also quite exotic and could be from nowhere else but Vosne. The impressively concentrated and intense larger-scaled flavors possess excellent size, weight and volume along with a gorgeous texture while exuding both a highly beguiling inner mouth perfume and ample minerality on the youthfully austere and massively persistent finish that is the epitome of power without weight. This too is absolutely magnificent.

Black purple. Where is the nose? Discreet at first but then so much starts to emerge. It is as if the detail is submerged in the volume. I can find more on the palate than in the bouquet, a question of La Romanée’s reserve. Some ripe apple, some blackberry, some minerals, but just too backward to give everything up. Ten minutes in the glass and it starts, this is really very fine indeed, but just as I start to feel the glow, time is up! I could have spent as long again trying to tease out all the nuances. Another tutorial needed, I fear.

The ripe, plummy fruit bears the mark of the robustly warm and dry vintage, but there is immense complexity, with notes of spice, smoke and mineral. There is also a savoury, almost sauvage animal note and a hint of wild herbs. The wine is concentrated and tannic, yet it is still approachable. In all likeliness, it will shut down in the interim, but the potential is enormous and this should be a wine for the ages. Among the best I have had from this site. As with all truly great wines, La Romanée from Liger-Belair is always unique.
