Colombera & Garella Costa della Sesia 2020
Coste della Sesia is a small DOC in Alto Piedmont which encompasses the tiny, yet better known Bramaterra, Gattinara and Lessona. This entry cuvee from Bramaterra based Colombera i Garelli is 70% Nebbiolo with the remaining equal parts Vespolina and Croatina.
Alto Piedmont has received more attention recently due to the warming climate as the quality of this cooler region is only increasing. The aromas are captivating; dried rose petal, small red berries and a nostalgic 'Grandmas' closet perfume. Wines from the region are often lacking concentration or mid-palate weight and whilst it isn't overt here, there's such a fine, delicate level of fruit that lies over lacy tannin. This is not a ripe Nebbiolo rather one of finesse and detail - the cliche 'an iron fist in a velvet glove' certainly comes to mind. Awesome stuff. Jeremy Muller, FWC.
