Chevillon Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru 'Chaignots' 2012
Domaine Robert Chevillon is a big favourite among Five Way Cellars staff. Part of the love affair (for us younger staff, at least) started back in Covid days when we had a few staff-only wine tastings upstairs at the shop to keep morale high. Once of those tastings had a Burgundy theme and Jeremy arrived with a Chevillon Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru ‘Chaignots’ 2011. The wine was remarkable and certainly the wine of the night in a strong field. A year later, I myself enjoyed the same wine from vintage 2015 which I found in a store in Japan and brought home to Sydney. Again, it looked fantastic. Fast forward to today and the importer of Chevillon has just shown us the three wines below, including a 2012 Chaignots (direct from the domaine). We tasted these and loved the wines for their slight rusticity (true to Nuits Saint Georges) and their inner charm. The 2020 is substantial with plenty of weight and tannin but savoury overall, while the 2012 is more resolved with slightly softer edges. And the Bourgogne, although expensive, is pretty serious and drinks well above the ‘Bourgogne’ classification. – Ches Cook, FWC.
The 2012 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots comes from the northern flank of the vineyard It is endowed with a voluminous and positively generous bouquet packed to the rafters with dark berries and autumn forest aromas the proliferate in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins that lend it a foursquare nature. Like many of Chevillon’s 2012s, this is “neat” and focused with a structured harmonious finish that is well-behaved. It will provide fine early drinking pleasure and shows great class. 89-91 points. - Neil Martin, Wine Advocate.
