Burklin Wolf Wachenheimer Gerumpel 1er Cru Riesling 2022
Gerumpel lies on the border to the Grand Cru site Pechstein, all volcanic soils in play here. Nicola said it’s the most mineral of their 1er crus and I’d agree. A perfectly interplay of the power of the site and the expressiveness from the vintage. Spiced yellow stone fruit, touch of passionfruit but not gaudy and layers of flinty minerality. A dark core of energy yet still approachable now. Stunning. Jeremy Muller & Chesterton Cook, FWC.
‘In spite of the wide spectrum of yellow fruits in the nose it remains cool and very precise. Wonderful tension and freshness with so much smoky character. At the very focused long finish this is as stony as it is salty. Already a beauty, this has excellent potential. From biodynamically grown grapes. Wild-fermented in large neutral oak. Vegan. Drink or hold.’ 95 points, Stuart Pigott, JS Wine Ratings, July 2023.
