Willunga 100 Grenache - From the 'Dress Circle' of McLaren Vale
I tasted the Willunga 100 wines in late July with owner David Gleave MW and winemaker Renae Hirsch and was really impressed by what I found. This comes at a time when the quality of Australian Grenache has never been higher, and the number of quality producers never larger. Blewitt Springs has certainly asserted itself as the leading region/sub-region in the country for the grape variety, with Australian Master of Wine and Grenache expert Ned Goodwin calling it 'the dress circle of McLaren Vale'. Indeed the wines coming out of here in recent times have been extremely impressive, with the likes of Aphelion, MMAD and now Willunga 100 all shining a light on the quality of these sandy soils and very old vines. These wines come highly recommended and stem from the near-perfect 2021 vintage. Ches Cook, FWC.
Willunga 100 Grenache 2022
From the Blind Spot vineyard in Blewitt Springs. 50+ year old vines. There’s a bit of a gum leaf/aniseed edge here, over juicy raspberry flavour. It has freshness and energy, a stony feel, plenty of crunch and vigour, and spicy leafy finish of good length, albeit a little scratchy and drying. Good though. 90 points. - Gary Walsh, Wine Front.
