Domaine de l’Arlot Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru 'Clos de l’Arlot' Blanc 2020
The Clos de l’Arlot Blanc comes from two small parcels of sélection massale vines planted in 1956 and 1984 on this vineyard’s steepest, rockiest section. The soil here is white, chalky clay, and the hard limestone bedrock is near the surface, making the parcel challenging to cultivate. Everything here must be done by hand (as in much of the Clos), including weeding and spraying. Our allocation reflects the tiny production.
Although the site’s exposure means genuine ripeness and results in a more textural white than La Gerbotte, the old vines and poor soils always seem to have the last word when it comes to the mineral freshness of the wine. This is absolutely the case in 2020, where the wine is considerably more complex and layered but also vibrant and chalky. A super example of the Clos.
“One plot was picked on 19th August, the rest after the reds. Racked to tank, fined, to bottle before Christmas. Mid lemon yellow, a more complex nose than Gerbotte …. a delicious stony quality along with ripe fruit notes, some plums, but this is harmonious, long and very appealing.” 92-94 points, Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
