Monchiero Barolo Rocche di Castiglione 2018
$145
Tasted alongside the 2019 Monchiero Langhe Nebbiolo, just for context, though maybe not fair. Rocche is such a wonderful cru, and Monchiero is still offering value, all things considered.
Such perfume! Rose petal, tea, and orange peel, raspberry, cherry, almond, a dusting of spice. Quiet succulence of ripe red fruits, silky fine powdery tannin grip, freshness and vigour, a fine stony ‘mineral’ feel, lovely flow and finesse, and a long finish that’s all crushed rock and fragrance. Wonderful. A more delicate, dare I say ‘Burgundian’ vintage, and none the worse for that. Drink 2024-2038. 95 Points. Gary Walsh, The Wine Front.
