Monte Antico Toscana 2021
First made in 1985, Monte Antico was a trail blazer for its time and became well known as the mini SuperTuscan.
85% Sangiovese with 10% Merlot and 5% Cabernet from vineyards both in and out of the Chianti zone, mostly aged in large oak. Bright cherry fruit with some spice, earth and leather, this is medium bodied and the perfect all rounder.
An elegant bouquet of leather, black cherries, licorice and plums. A medium- to full-bodied palate. Rich in ripe red fruit, subtle notes of vanilla and violet are well-integrated with the soft tannins and silky texture. Winemaker note
Monte Antico is selected from some of the region’s best vineyards and the merits of chosen locations and strict quality parameters make for the wine’s depth, structure and character, showing abundant Tuscan seductiveness with delicious fruit that is both food-friendly and pocket-friendly. The wine is aged for one year in oak (80% Slavonian barrels, 20% in barrique) and is dark ruby in colour with a bouquet of leather, earth, herbs, black cherry and plum. The round, spicy and elegant palate makes it extremely versatile with any fare from pasta to meat, fowl and cheese.
The grapes for this wine were grown in the areas of Maremma, Colline Pisane (mainly Alta Valdera) and Colli Fiorentini. Soil types vary, but span from compact, very fine-textured limestone at 1,300-1,500 feet above sea level to a classic, clay and calcareous, rocky galestro around 1,300 feet above sea level, and go on to a clay, siliceous and calcareous soil at 820-990 feet above sea level. The finest grapes are harvested at their peak ripeness.
This balanced combination of geological diversity makes for the wine’s consistent excellence. Importer note
