Gaja Gaia & Rey Chardonnay 2023
A wine that perhaps needs no formal introduction but most certainly deserves one, especially if you are just starting your vinous journey with Gaja. Arguably Italy’s most iconic Chardonnay and at the time of creation a very controversial one when it was first released in 1983.
Planting Chardonnay within the boundaries of Barbaresco DOCG in Treiso was unthinkable yet now most would acknowledge it was one of several innovative ideas from Angelo Gaja that challenged the traditions of the region and cemented the estate as one of the greatest producers of Italy.
Gaia & Rey Chardonnay is produced from two separate vineyards in the Langhe area: Giacosa planted in 1979 in Treiso and Rivette within Serralunga d’Alba planted in 1989.
At present the wine continues to be 100% from these two sites but with the recently planting of Chardonnay in the Langhe Alta by Gaja it’s expected as these vines mature a component will be included from these higher altitude vineyards.
100% fermented in barrel, full malolactic with 18 months further elevage in barrel.
Importer’s notes.
A touch shy to reveal itself after only just being recently bottled following its 18 months in barrel. Acacia, golden apples with some white stone fruit sitting behind, vanilla and hints of toast on nose. On the palate you see that creamy richness from 100% malo with saline edges and a tangy line of acidity to finish. Will definitely benefit from some further time in bottle to flesh out and for all parts of the wine come together. Cameron Roebuck, FWC.
