Gunderloch Hipping Riesling GG 2021
Gunderloch own 4 hectares of the Hipping grand cru. The site is located in an exposed position on the Roter Hang where the southeast and south-facing slope meet. Its position on the ‘Rotliegend’ formation between Pettenthal and Ölberg is significant, and unites several outstanding pre-conditions for vines. The warmth of a broad lake-like section of the Rhine and intense sun exposure, a wind-protected site and the very weathered red slate of the steep slope allow small Riesling bunches of grapes to develop intense aromas and flavours. The family's prime parcel in Hipping is protected by a row of terraces and the steep flank of the Pettenthal. Hipping tends to yield wines of incredibly expressive exotic fruit and significantly creamy texture.
“Vinified in oak and stainless steel, the 2021 Hipping Riesling trocken GG offers a pure, refined and flinty/stony bouquet with ripe, bright, elegant and lush fruit. Intense, round and very elegant on the palate, this is a pretty lush yet crystalline and saline Hipping that is still quite grippy and slightly dryish on the finish. This wine should either be aerated or cellared for at least five or six years. 12.5% stated alcohol. Screw-cap closure. Tasted at the domaine in August 2022.” 92 Points. Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate
“Very youthful with pronounced grapefruit peel (zest and pith) character plus lemon balm. Properly ripe and really silky, yet very cool and tightly focused, this has been built for the long term. Firm core of fine tannins and a ton of wet stone minerality. From organically grown grapes. Vegan. Drinkable now, but best from 2024. Screw cap. 93 Points.” Stuart Pigott, jamessuckling.com
