Paul Pillot Bourgogne Rouge 2023
This top-drawer Bourgogne is drawn from two Estate-owned sites in the southern reaches of Chassagne, near Chagny and Remigny. The soils are the classic clay and limestone of the Côte, and the vines are 35-years-old on average. The grapes were handpicked and mostly destemmed before natural fermentation. The wine matured for 12 months in a mix of steel vats and large, used barrels. Pillot employed roughly 50% whole-bunches in this wine for structure and perfume. It’s a deep, fleshy, spicy Bourgogne that is simply brilliant for the level. Importer’s notes.
“Aromas of sweet cherries, berries and petals introduce the 2023 Bourgogne Rouge, a medium-bodied, lively wine with a sweet core of fruit and fine, chalky tannins.” 88-89 points, William Kelley, The Wine Advocate.
“Glowing purple, beautiful aromatics, complex raspberries with a floral overlay. More structure behind then the sweetness of the fruit. Medium plus length. A lovely pinot to drink young. Drink from 2026-2028.” 88-89 points, Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy.
