Hubert Lamy Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Blanc 'Derriere Chez Edouard' 2022
Lamy makes three cuvées from this beautiful southeast-facing plot, which sits behind the village cemetery. The Pinot Noir was planted in 1960; on the steeper slope directly behind are the Chardonnay vines planted some 20 years ago at a density of 14,000 vines per hectare (the vines that give this wine). At the top of the vineyard is the Haute Densité parcel (planted at a staggering 30,000 vines per hectare). The soils here are powerful white marl (chalky clay), which always imposes a deep and structured character on the final wine. This is another great-value wine in the context of Burgundy prices today. It’s a deep, rocky wine packed with wet stone, saline notes and long, cool close. Importer’s Note
“Breadth but less precision to start than the Frionnes, accented with a pretty floral perfume though. Incisive again – here such a width of more obviously mineral flavour – a finish that’s just as good as the Frionnes. Today I have a small preference for the Frionnes – but it’s personal, not really a better or lesser wine…” Bill Nanson, Burgundy Report
“The 2022 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Derrière Chez Edouard is showing nicely, unwinding in the glass with a gently reductive bouquet of pear, white flowers, hazelnuts and wet stones. Medium-bodied, pure and satiny, it's seamless and youthfully understated, with a bright core of fruit and a long, saline finish.”93 points, William Kelley, The Wine Advocate
