Denis Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru 'Les Champeaux' 2022
Very limited. With its eroded limestone walls, all covered in creepers and wildflowers, this is one of Gevrey’s most picturesque vineyards. It is situated high on the border of Brochon next to Les Evocelles. The soils are very stony with red clays, and the mother rock is very close to the surface. The Mortet vines here are now 80 years old, and he ploughs his four small plots (totalling 0.5 hectares) by horse. This site typically delivers very small berries and powerful, ripe fruit flavours with high-grown, fruit-of-the-forest finesse and freshness. This year, Mortet used 20% new wood and 30% hand destemmed fruit to produce a stunning (and very rare) wine. Incredible finesse on offer here for a lucky few.
"The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Champeaux is especially suave and charming this year, wafting from the glass with aromas of plums, cherries, rose petals, orange zest and spices. Medium to full-bodied, ample and perfumed, with supple tannins and a seamless, harmonious profile, it concludes with a long, saline finish." 92-94 points, William Kelley, The Wine Advocate.
"The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux 1er Cru comes from 70- to 80-year-old vines farmed by horse and includes one-third whole bunches with the main stem removed. The bouquet is well-defined with perfumed red berry fruit, marmalade, and damp earth coming through with time in the glass. The palate is elegant and harmonious, an understated Gevrey with shimmering red fruit and plenty of mineralité on the finish. This is linear and strict yet draws you in with each sip. Superb." 92-94 points, Neal Martin, Vinous.
