Denis Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru 'Les Champeaux' 2021
Very limited. With its eroded limestone walls covered in creepers and wildflowers, this is one of Gevrey's most picturesque vineyards. It is situated high on the border of Brochon next to Les Evocelles. The soils are very stony with red clays, and the mother rock is very close to the surface. The Mortet vines are now 80 years old, and he ploughs his four small plots (totalling 0.5 hectares) by horse. This site typically delivers very small berries and powerful, ripe fruit flavours with high-grown, fruit-of-the-forest finesse and freshness. This year, Mortet used 20% new wood and 30% bunches (pedicels only) for this stunning (and very rare) wine. Incredible finesse on offer here for a lucky few.
'Not the deepest in colour, and indeed a slightly lighter fine boned approach on the nose. Sweet rose petals on the palate, a little raspberry, a touch of white pepper, lightly saline too. A complex and very refined wine.' 92-94 points. Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy.
