Bodegas Yuste Aurora Oloroso Sherry 500ml
Perhaps the most exciting Sydney restaurant opening of the year has been, in my opinion, Lennox Hastie’s Gilda’s. A Basque wine bar and restaurant, Gilda’s absolutely nails the brief and while its food is a touch more polished and refined than you may generally see in Basque country, its roots and clear to see. But for a lover of Spanish wine, what is even more exciting is the wine list head somm Benoit Jackman has pulled together.
Of particular interest to me is the Fortifieds list and especially the impressive range of Sherries that are available by the glass. This is where I discovered the incredibly well-priced wines of Bodegas Yuste. Amontillado is generally my go-to style of Sherry, balancing fresh saline flavours with oxidative notes of almond and rancio. The Olosoro goes much further down the oxidative path, and is complex array of roasted nuts, brine and dried fruit. These are well worth a try for all Sherry lovers or for anyone interested in discovering the wines of Jerez.
