Bloodwood - Pioneers of Orange, NSW
Bloodwood is a long-term favourite of ours at Five Way Cellars. The pioneers of viticulture in Orange, NSW, Stephen and Rhonda Doyle consistently produce fantastic cool climate wines at even better price points.
Bloodwood Riesling 2017
“Off-dry style, the sweetness is needed to temper the bracing acidity. It works well and there’s an amazing orange-lemon oil aroma and flavor with some more complex daikon and ginger spice. Rating 95. Drink to 2025.” James Halliday Wine Companion 2020.
Bloodwood Chardonnay 2018
Another beautiful chardonnay from the high altitude region of Orange. It’s beautifully restrained and perfectly balanced. Love it. Stone fruit, a touch of white flowers, honey, meal and barely perceptible oak. Underlying wisps of minerality hark back to the geology of Bloodwood soil and the fact that these are the oldest vines in Orange – planted in 1983. You would swear you were drinking something in excess of $80 a bottle. But no, this is the quality you get from Bloodwood at affordable pricing. Jump on board. Ian Cook, FWC
Bloodwood 'Big Men in Tights' Rose 2019
Malbec and cabernet franc (5%) from 37yo vines, hand-picked and sorted, whole-bunch pressed. Red cherry and red berry; juicy and fruit-sweet. Seductive. 91 Points. James Halliday, Halliday's Wine Companion.
Bloodwood Cabernet Franc 2015
Bloodwood are a favourite producer of ours, for their excellent range of reds and whites. The straight Cabernet Franc is a rare beast in Australia, so we were more than pleasantly surprised when one of our favourite producers lobbed this gem at us. Perfumed with blue fruits, florals & cranberries on the nose it hits all the right varietal notes on the palate, with tobacco, blueberry & spicy black fruits underpinned by a savoury edge. The wine is soft medium bodied & an absolute joy to drink now. Finishing soft & plush, highly recommended. FWC
Bloodwood Shiraz 2016
Beautifully lifted cool climate aromatics – mulberry, spiced cherry, white and black pepper, light brown spices – remind me a little of a Gaillard St. Joseph I had recently. Once again, the balance and persistence are perfect. Starts off quite juicy in the mouth and then all the secondary notes of brown spices, dry Provençale herb kick in. It has real length and refinement. Highly recommended. Ian Cook, FWC.
Bloodwood 'Maurice' 2016
A true Bordeaux blend in style and shape. Lots of leafy aromas amongst dark blue and black fruits of blueberry and mulberry. The palate is only medium bodied yet with a strong core of primary fruit, seemingly filled out nicely by the inclusion of some Merlot. Texturally it is quite fine but the tannins do make themselves known towards the back in a gritty and slightly drying form. Cabernet Sauvignon dominant. – Ches Cook, FWC.
Bloodwood Silk Purse 2016 375ml
Light green gold in colour with gentle lime and honeysuckle aromas supporting the typical silky mouth-feel of this style of late picked lightly botrytised Bloodwood Riesling. Enjoyable drinking now with enough juicy acidity to warrant some time in your cellar – Bloodwood Website
