Wynns Michael Shiraz 2018
The star of the shiraz line-up at Wynns. An impressive wine built for longevity as much as sheer enjoyment. There's a certain refinement to this vintage, echoed in this wine. Florals, cherries dusted with pepper, cinnamon and crushed herbs. Full bodied yet buffered by finely chiselled tannins and pulsing acidity. Exceptional balance. A more demure and down tempo Michael but not without chew of suave, fancy woody spice and dark chocolate giving the brambly blackberries and sooty, saline mineral characters a place to sit within. Seamless, flowing, thick but satiny feel, with a velvety glow and a good sense of satisfaction and ‘money’s worth’ with each sip. It feels undeniably fancy and opulent with appropriate texture and structure in tow. And it will benefit with time. Get stuck in now for impact, watch it mellow with grace. 94 points - Mike Bennie, The Wine Front
I came here expecting plush, dark fruit served with a big cuddle of oak and got an entirely different experience. There are sweet toffee-light aspects here but this is decidedly medium in weight, both in fruit and oak terms. This is Michael Shiraz’s more elegant side. There’s a graphite element here, hints of tobacco, sweet red liquorice and the spice of oak more than the out-and-out flavour of it. It’s a lovely wine to settle into but more than anything, and I don’t think this often of Coonawarra shiraz, everything about it suggests that cellaring, medium term and longer, will greatly reward. 94 Points - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front.
