Traviarti Nebbiolo 2023
Simon Grant, the winemaker at Traviarti, approached us in June 2025 of running a masterclass showcasing all his Nebbiolo's from 2016-2023 inclusive and of course we said yes! Simon and Helen had sold their home vineyard 18 or so months earlier so this was a real privilege for us to be able to taste the Nebbiolo's which finished with the 2023 which is their last vintage.
Seeing their Nebbiolo's over the journey confirmed what we had already known at FWC that the Traviarti Nebbiolo is firmly in the top tier of Australian Nebbiolo's and what we saw across the line up was a great purity of core red fruit and liquorice, incredible energy and ripe and chalky tannins. Simon spoke in detail about Nebbiolo's need for humidity and a long growing season to obtain phenolic ripeness and how the home vineyard at over 600m in the alpine region of Beechworth provides that great environment.
2023 was the third year of cool and wet weather in Beechworth and I saw this initially in the 2023 Estate Nebbiolo given it was a touch shy to reveal itself on the nose with savoury elements sitting ahead of its core plush fruit. On the palate however is where you can see that in a few years it will beautifully unfurl itself with a core of concentrated raspberry and red liquorice all supported by energetic acidity and wonderfully framing fruit tannin. The 2023 is a very ethereal wine and full of grace. Bittersweet that it's their last vintage, get some to put down and enjoy in the next 5-15 years. Highly recommended. Cameron Roebuck, FWC.
