Jasper Hill Riesling 2023
Jasper Riesling exists in a world of its own, far removed from what one may consider 'typical' Australian Riesling. This wine is generous and open-knit, quite ripe with stone fruit character and plenty of phenolic grip. But there's also lemon balm, ginger spice and wax - quite a lot packed in here. But there is ample acidity, too, meaning it is overflowing in freshness and lift. Aged examples are always impressive. - Ches Cook. FWC.
I've always liked this wine. Among the very best rieslings in Australia, a land with more of the grape under vine than Alsace. Far away from the monochromatic limey accents that are so ubiquitous on these shores, while as reliant on phenolic rails as it is on obvious freshness. Juicy. Pithy. Granny Smith granita, a faint whiff of jasmine, pink grapefruit, anise and lemon blossom. Mid-weighted, beautifully textured and immensely long. Mercifully, no petroleum. Drinkable now, but best from 2028. Screw cap. 96 points. Ned Goodwin MW, Jamessuckling.com, August 2023
