By Farr 'Farrside' Pinot Noir 2022
The 2022 is the palest Farrside yet. The perfume of the Farrside – rose petal, red fruits, quite supple and very refined – very fine and elegant, seduction at its best – lighter than any other Farrside’s, yet not lacking anything and boy does it go on and on. All that delicacy through the wine, yet then when a full glass into drinking the wine the classic firmness, ironstone and fine tannins start to emerge. The whole bunch, the undergrowth, the darker fruits – they are all there. It’s awesome. This cool vintage has produced a gem. If Australian Pinot Noir has a problem, it is usually a lack of acid. Farrside has it perfectly judged – you see a little whole bunch (60%) – by the way that often reduces colour – note to self: must open a Dujac (such an expensive pastime these days). Bright spicy red fruit with sleek lacy perfume (what in Farrside) then the power builds with earth, mushroom, intense, yet medium bodied. This is a great wine, yet a little outside the By Farr spectrum. This vineyard is now fully organic and Nick Farr thinks this has something to do with the 2020 vintage. Apologise for the crazy waffle. Ian Cook, FWC.
