Albino Rocca Barbaresco Montersino 2018
The Montersino Cru is located at the southern tip of Barbaresco, close to Treiso at 320 metres above sea level. The Roccas’ 0.42-hectare parcel is within the highest and coolest area of Barbaresco and is one of Barbaresco’s most elevated plots. The south-facing vines were planted in 1998 by Angelo Rocca and are rooted on very poor clay and limestone slopes with thin layers of sandstone. The sandstone brings finesse, as does the altitude. Daniela Rocca has pointed out that this soil type (locally called Formazioni di Lequio) resembles Barolo’s Monforte and some of the chalky soils found in Serralunga.
Each year these soils produce a beautiful wine that’s perfect for Burgundy (and Barbaresco!) lovers, and so it was in 2018. Packed with perfume and vibrancy, the supple, silken texture here is skilfully interlaced with pretty red fruits, spice and savoury, meaty notes, all anchored by subtle grip and animated freshness. Finishing with scented, tapering length, the class and elegance of Rocca’s 2018 vintage are on clear display.
“Ripe berry, blue flower and menthol aromas shape the nose. Full-bodied and enveloping, the savory palate offers mature black cherry, raspberry compote, licorice and a hint of mocha framed in tightly woven, fine-grained tannins. It's nicely balanced, with fresh acidity.” 95 points, Kerin O Keefe, Wine Enthusiast
“Showing a very fine and lean appearance, the Albino Rocca 2018 Barbaresco Montersino is delicate and nuanced even at this very young stage in its life. There are layers of small berry, cassis, grilled earth, blue flower and crushed stone that complete this very classic portrait of a grape. Only 2,000 bottles were released.” 93 points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate
