Vignerons Schmolzer & Brown 'Thorley' Nebbiolo 2021
Another reason we should all be considering Beechworth the home of Nebbiolo in Australia. V&B's 2021 rendition is a medium bodied wine balancing a linear, tensile shape with pockets of sweet fruit and generosity. It brings the structure we may expect of the variety, along with a taut mid-palate, but also delivers some immediate appeal in the form of blood orange, liquorice root, bitter cherry and brown spice. As with all the wines in this year's release, it’s a wine of purity, balance and unadulterated charm. - Ches Cook, FWC.
58 dozen produced. Vine age is six or seven years. 28 days maceration on skins. 18 months in old puncheon and hogshead. Fine perfume here, and a certain cool alpine feel and clarity. Red cherry, new leather, mint and liquorice root, a little spice and orange peel. Medium-bodied, juicy cherry and ripe strawberry, some savoury tobacco flavours, bright acidity, fine brick dust tannin, and a long spicy/dusty finish. So nicely done. It's lucid and tight, and has the signature of Nebboiolo firmly etched. I'm impressed. Very. Drink 2024-2033+. 94+ Points. Gary Walsh, The Wine Front.
