Tyrrell's Special Release Cabernet Sauvignon 2023
I tried this out of barrel with Chris Tyrrell in September last year and was shocked how great it looked! So inviting, no astringency yet distinctly Cabernet and despite only a short time in barrel, it was already so complete. Gary Walsh's note below is pin point. Beyond Lakes Folly you wouldn't reach for Hunter Valley Cab - though should I be surprised that Chris would make a superb Cabernet? Not at all. Jeremy Muller, FWC.
The Cabernet was sourced from the Pokolbin Hills Vineyard, which was planted in 2009 at the base of Pokolbin Mountain and features brown and red podzolic clay loam soil. 15% new French oak. Hunter Valley Cabernet from Tyrrell's. How exciting.
Blue and red fruits, a distinct violet and aniseed perfume, pencils and cedar. Medium-bodied, plush in purple and blue fruit, balanced acidity, raspberry succulence but with a fine mass of gravelly tannin, delightful mouth-perfume, and a cocoa powder finish of excellent length. A distinct 'mineral' feel to it. Oh my. I love everything about this. It drinks so well now, though I reckon later will be just fine too. Beautifully made. Drink 2024-2032+." 95 Points.
