Aphelion 'Confluence' Grenache 2022
All from the Wait vineyard this year, 30% whole bunch for aromatics. Modern Aussie Grenache is certainly having it's moment - so many great examples around. Add this to the list. Ripe, yet fresh red and darker fruits mixed with a smattering of provencal herbs. Medium bodied, the fruit is certainly intoxicating but as you look further there's a balancing grunt that is exposed and is paired with chalky, savoury tannin. Delicious. – Jeremy, Muller, FWC.
Octogenarian Blewitt Springs bush vines. Fermented wild, replete with 30% whole bunches. Maturation in larger neutral French oak of various formats. Pinosité in spades, with a shimmer of cranberry, persimmon, fecund strawberry and kirsch. From the first whiff to the long jittery linger, such is the wine's intensity of flavour, crunch and tannic sinew. Picked on the earlier side, verging on marginal. Pulled off with aplomb. 93 points, Ned Goodwin for James Halliday.
85 year old vines planted in Blewitt Springs. Raspberry, plum, an ozone and coal dust thing here (don’t mind me), aniseed and dried flowers. Fresh, fine dusty tannin, orange zest, juicy cherry and exotic spice. I like the slightly peppery aspects too, and the finish is firm and long. Very good. Drink 2023-2030+. 94 points. - Gary Walsh, Wine front.
