Tyrrell's Vat 9 Shiraz 2017
Hand-picked, open-fermented, matured in new and 1yo 2700 litre French casks for 15 months. This is opulent and rich, bringing back memories of ’59, ’61, ’65 and ’66 (’65 the standout). The black fruits are wrapped in velvet, the oak and tannins watching on enviously. A wonderful wine with its own part of history. Rating 97. Drink to 2047. Halliday Wine Companion 2020.
One of my favourite reds in Australia, some relating to taking my Mum there a few years in a row back in the late 70’s and getting my cellar started at her expense. Recently massively enjoyed a 1996 bottle of this wine – unfortunately they need a minimum of 10 years and 20 is better in the cellar. This 2017 vintage is one for the ages. Not much of it so be quick. Ian Cook - FWC
