Tyrrell’s have it spot-on when it comes to releasing their Semillons with this sort of age. In this case the wine is no long shy or overly tight but is rather starting to come into its own and beginning to show you what’s under the hood. In 2014 it is especially impressive. This is a zingy, energetic and lively drink with plenty of acid yet plenty of fleshy fruit, too. It’s got crushed lime, lemon pith and lemon grass as well as a slight waxiness at the back. This is our pick of the newly released Semillons coming out of a stellar vintage in the Hunter. – Ches Cook, FWC.
MB [Mike Bennie] has already covered three of the 2014 Tyrrell’s Semillon releases, so I’ll bring up the rear with the remaining two. This and Vat 1 are my favourites this vintage. Lemon, vanilla, floral notes with the signature HVD lime tucked in nicely. Super clear fruit, beautiful soft line of acid draws it very long, a light flintiness shapes it up. Super long drizzled lime finish. Impeccable, and even as a baby wine, already great to drink. 95+ points. – Gary Walsh, Wine Front.
