Shaw & Smith Balhannah Shiraz 2015
Taken from a small plot of land directly behind the winery. 80% whole bunch used but it soaks it all up extremely well. The sign of a very good wine i guess. This is floral and spicy with rolling black fruit and purple florals emerging. The observation was made by Ian that the wine has 'concentration without excess weight' which sums up the wine very nicely. It's not dense or heavy, but still manages to show pronounced fruit and floral notes within a firm frame that is built to last. - Ches Cook, FWC.
The second release from the close planted Estate vineyard planted in '05, 70% whole bunches, 30% whole berries, open-fermented, matured in French puncheons for 14 months, with a further 14 months in bottle before release. This is an exercise in power, bay leaf staring down any attempt to add red fruits, the tannins of the same ilk, ditto oak. Despite the power, the balance and synergy of the components is undeniable. 14% alc. Rating: 97 Drink by: 2035. – James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2018, tasted 23 Feb 2017
