Tre Bicchieri – Gambero Rosso 2020
The lovely underground cellar, with walls in lava stone and a roof covered by a metre of soil planted with Mediterranean herbs chosen meticulously from the Nebrodi mountains and Etna, is the latest project completed by Mario and Michele Faro. They drew inspiration from their grandparents, who farmed this land and introduced the two brothers to the wines of the mountain, the “muntagna”, when they were boys. The cellar is an icon of contemprorary Sicilian winemaking, beloved by enthusiasts all over the world for its artisanal style and elegant wines.
A well-deserved Tre Bicchieri went to the Vigna Barbagalli 2016 from nerello mascalese. This super, lightly drinkable wine, with an elegant nose of violet, ripe berry fruit, spice, thyme and sage, confirms its character in the mouth with racy, silky tannins and great length.
-Gambero Rosso, Italian Wines, 2020
The Cook family visited this outstanding producer in January 2019. What a revelation – this is my favourite Sicilian wine. Light yet intensely perfumed and persistent. Love it! Michele served it with a big rustic bowl of tomato based bolognaise with rigatoni. Awesome.
