“It’s its own valley” Mac says of the Yarra Junction sub-region. He adds that “2019 tested the resolve of the vine and the resolve of the winemaker” in reference to the water stress that characterised the vintage. This resulted in greatly reduced yields yet concentrated flavours in the fruit that was harvested, meaning that the quality has remained high. This Chardonnay is citrus-driven and flinty, showing lemon pith, lime leaf, some wax and a touch of dough. Its got a real zing to the acid line and layers of flinty detail. Only medium in weight, it will get better and better over the short to medium term. Chablis may be reluctantly used as a reference here due to the wine’s linearity and acid drive. – Ches Cook, FWC.
