Kusuda Syrah 2015
If you wanted to explore the concept of ‘precision’ in wine, Kusuda is a good place to do so. Winemaking is thoughtful but simple, with a quarter of the wine seeing new oak. Some 20 months maturing in barrel. Kusuda rarely disappoints. Perhaps New Zealand’s greatest syrah, or at least in the very upper echelon.
Beautiful perfume – boysenberry, sweet flowers, white pepper, pomegranate, musk. The palate is surprisingly fine, sleek, lithe, showered with cherry pip and boysenberry flavour but mostly about savoury, brambly-herbal spices and barely there but grippy, suede tannins. So much structure and shape. Delicious. Incredible really. Wow. 95 points. - Mike Bennie, Wine Front.
