Jacques Prieur Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru 'Combettes' 2019
Facing south-east, this 1.5 hectare plot has clay-limestone soil with a strong presence of pebbles. Whole bunch-pressed, settled over 12 to 14 hours and then full barrel fermentation (about 30% new). 100% MLF. 19 months’ élevage.
First to be picked. Racy pale yellow. These are ripe aromatics, a faint touch of viognier and honeysuckle in evidence. This does not quite have the heart that Combettes used to, finishes more on the barrel. Nadine Gublin explains that she is keen to maintain the chiselled aspect and she has done that quite well, though the warmth of the vintage is probably the winner here. 90-93 points. The expressive nose flirts with reduction though notes of exotic fruit and soft floral nuances can be discerned. There is excellent freshness and intensity to the dense and mouth coating flavours that possess a caressing mouthfeel before culminating in a caressing, focused and chiselled finish. This is at once very classy and very Puligny while displaying the natural finesse of Combettes. Lovely. 91-93 points. Allen Meadows, Burghound June 2021
