Henschke Stone Jar Tempranillo 2015
The Stone Jar Tepranillo was inspired by Stephen and Prue Henschke’s travels through the Rioja wine region of Spain, and after speaking with many winemakers and growers in the region, they decided to plant tempranillo and graciano vines on the rocky soils on the north facing slope at the range overlooking the village of Eden Valley in 2000 and 2002. The vines are grown using organic and biodynamic practices and the wine is made using the traditional winemaking technique of open top fermentation. In 2015, a small parcel (7%) of high-quality mataro was co-fermented with tempranillo and incorporated into the final blend for added complexity.
This wine has really made strides since we first tried it several months ago. Smells very varietal with red and black cherry, spiced plum, dark cola/sarsaparilla and a dusty earthy background. There is some silky generosity in the middle before fine silty tannin closes the deal. One of Australia’s best examples of Tempranillo. FWC.
