The acclaimed Henschke family, foundation members of Australia’s First Families of Wine, was one of the pioneering families of South Australia when Johann Christian Henschke migrated from Silesia (Germany in 1841). Each generation has contributed to the legend with fourth generation Cyril Henschke pioneering varietal, single-vineyard wines in the 1950s, most famously Mount Edelstone and Hill of Grace Shiraz. Fifth-generation winemaker Stephen and his viticulturist wife Prue have won many awards for their talent, innovation and integration of vineyard and winery. They lead the way with environmental, biodynamic and organic principles. Henschke wines are handcrafted and deeply personal, reflecting the unique terroir of vineyards: the wine names tell either a personal story of the family or the cultural history of their region.
Crimson in colour with deep red hues. Concentrated aromas of blue and black berry fruits, dark plum and exotic five spice exude from the glass, while more subtle and classic nuances of black pepper, sage and chicory allure and entice. The palate is rich, lush and elegantly structured with layers of texture and beautifully balanced flavours of blue and black fruits, dried herbs and charcuterie. Fine velvety tannins and a savoury mid-palate provide incredible length and depth.
Deep red colour with a little purple tint. The bouquet is typical Hill of Grace in its fragrant spice, licorice and raspberry aromas with a trace of tar, some black pepper, the palate flavour mesmerisingly intense and lush, with tremendous depth and velvet texture. A wonderful balancing act, very full-bodied and powerful, the texture astonishingly fruit-sweet and plush - just a sublime wine. Almost endless length. Rating: 98 Points; Huon Hooke; The Real Review
