This wine was super impressive over the weekend when we opened it up for our in-store tasting. The aromatics are pronounced, with cranberry, rose petal, blood orange and Aperol all there. On the palate, similar flavours present themselves within a medium-bodied frame. It’s pretty and elegant, quite succulent and ready to go. It’s ripe but without excessive sweet fruit and tannins are gentle and rippling. Extremely delicious drinking. Big things in store for Nebbiolo at Giaconda once vine age begins to kick in. – Ches Cook, FWC.
Giaconda’s second release of young vine Nebbiolo comes from the superb 2016 vintage. The fruit for this wine has been grown on a special site of red clay and shale soils at Red Hill overlooking the Beechworth township. This site sits 620 metres at its highest and provides a cool and sheltered exposure for optimal ripening conditions. A high-toned wine with lifted aromatics of rose petals and red fruits. The fun starts from the very first sip – an assault on your senses with all the hallmarks of this variety. Intense red fruits and savoury characters, charged with super-fine tannins and a subtle backbone of acidity. Having such depth and impact for a second crop, the mind boggles as to what will present itself when vine maturity kicks in! Cellaring: 3-10 years.
