Eleni & Edouard Vocoret Chablis 1er Cru Montee de Tonnerre 2023
“This is the only 1er Cru where Eleni & Edouard blend two separate smaller lieu dits into one cuvee. They have two plots in Pieds d’Aloup and one in Chapelot but the latter plot is just 0.14 of a hectare, so too small to bottle on its own. Hence the three plots totalling 0.55 hectares are blended together under Montee de Tonnerre. The Pieds d’Aloup parcel was planted in 1962, over 60 years old. South West facing. Pieds d’Aloup is grey blue marl and the Chapelot soft limestone. Wild Fermented in steel then elevage in barrel for 12 months of 6 to 30 year old barriques.
“Here too the expressive nose is wafting and airy with its array of more floral-suffused aromas that include those of iodine, spice, shrimp shell and sea breeze nuances. While the middle weight flavors are not particularly dense, they are notably finer, indeed sophisticated, with evident minerality adding a sense of lift to the relatively tightly coiled finish. This is quite classy and should also age well, in this case offering up to a decade of potential improvement” – SWEET SPOT – OUTSTANDING – 91-93 pts – Burghound.
“This has a lively and exuberant bouquet, very expressive of its terroir and at the moment, displaying more energy than the Fôrets. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, just a touch mentholé towards the finish, but retaining freshness and terroir expression throughout. I see this maturing beautifully in bottle – a very impressive 2023 in the making” – 92-94 pts – Neal Martin.
