Curly Flat Pinot Noir 2019
Curly Flat has made its name on powerfully-built examples of the variety, fruit often matched step-by-step by oak. There’s cedary oak here but it’s been dialled back while, at the same time, tannin has been dialled up. This wine has fruit but it also has a great emphasis on structure. It’s not chunky, it’s chalky and dry, effectively mineral, almost quartz-like. It brings gravitas to the Curly Flat equation. I looked at this wine over the course of 24 hours and every time I did my score on it went up. Drink 2022-2029+, 95 Points - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front
Curly Flat’s 2019 Pinot Noir is a deep, powerful wine. Lots of dark cherry, woody notes with hints of earthy, vegetal tones that lurk behind a wall of tannin. Some critics have called this wine “chunky”, for me the bones are all there, watching this open over the evening only improved my perceptions with the first gaps in the wine filling in nicely. Matt Harrop has recently been nominated for the Winemaker of the Year, and perhaps Curly Flat will prove to be the place where he is able to express his style most authentically! Time will tell. – Will Lennox, FWC
