Crawford River Reserve Riesling 2006
Another showstopper from one of our favourite Riesling producers. The pale colour of this wine really belies its intensity and power. The nose is pure and minerally- all chalk and wet rocks with spice, kaffir lime leaf and a hint of passionfruit. A particularly rich mid-palate is threaded with acid and minerality, the latter being the trademark which distinguishes the reserve from its stablemates. Subtle and coiled at present, it will develop into a rich and complex wine with patient cellaring. Unfortunately there will be no 2007 vintage of this wine, meaning that the current offering will have to tide us all over until the 2008. Stockpile. FWC. (*tasting note from 2008).
Pale, bright straw-green; could easily be mistaken for a one- or two-year-old Riesling if served blind. A faint touch of CO2 is in play; the purity of the lime and mineral-like acidity is pure Crawford River. Will make a fine 21st Birthday present for anyone born in ’06. Rating: 96. Drink: now to 2027.” James Halliday, Wine Companion 2016.
“Mature riesling from arguably Australia’s pre-eminent riesling producer – in the context, of course, that there’s a lot of stiff competition for that mantle. Straw-green in colour, highly suggestive of orange and mandarin on the nose, textural in a delicious way, bursting with flavour and life. It is fully mature but vigorous with complex flavour. Put simply, it’s a treat. 95 points. – Campbell Mattinson, Wine Front.
