Borgogno Classico Barolo 2016
I know I say it a lot, but the style of Barolo Borgogno make, is exactly my thing. All Barolo here, from five crus – Cannubi, Cannubi San Lorenzo, Fossati, Liste, San Pietro delle Viole – just like Nonno used to make. Red fruits, star anise, roses, aromatic herbs. It’s medium-bodied, kind of pretty, but appropriately firm. Lovely tussle between quiet succulence of fruit and tannin, ideal freshness, and a long finish with just a little blood orange coming through. So classic. Love this. Drink : 2023 - 2039+. 95 points. Gary Walsh, The Wine Front.
Gary’s note above is spot on. This starts with a nice lick of red liquorice and jube, being somewhat gentle in its approach. Pleasant wafts of rose petal prettiness are evident on the nose before a palate of blood orange citrus, hints of amaro and a pinch of fennel all become apparent. Twirling through the palate is a succulent tow of acid which performs its job wonderfully in providing liveliness, freshness, direction and length. Tannin is present but again, it is soft and only a minor player. A very well-rounded and complete wine. Drink out of a big, round Burgundy glass. – Ches Cook, FWC.
