Benevelli’s 2016 Barolo Ravera di Monforte is gracious, exquisitely perfumed and totally beguiling from the very first taste. Crushed flowers, mint, white pepper, blood orange and bright red berry fruit all lift from the glass as this weightless, classically austere Barolo shows off its personality. Bright acids and prominent tannins give the 2016 a good deal of bite and nervy energy vis-à-vis the other Barolos in the range. I wouldn’t feel in any rush here. Ageing for the Ravera is ten months in 500-litre tonneaux (with about 10% new wood) followed by 13 months in 35HL cask. Drink 2024-2041, 95 Points. Antonio Galloni – Vinous.
One of the best value Baroli in the shop from the outstanding 2016 vintage. Ian Cook
“Aged in second passage barrique for one year, and then ten year old large format botti for 15 months, which appeases the traditionalist in me, with the latter pretty much taking away the influence of the former. Red fruits, liquorice, chai, toasted almonds. Full-bodied, cherry and red fruits, firm tannin offering a wide-grained grip, again cherry and almond with some dried herb and tobacco in the mix. It has freshness, vigour and plenty of length. No shortage of impact, and plenty in the tank for a long life in the cellar. 94+ points.” – Gary Walsh, Wine Front.
