While Josh Cooper may have hung his shingle on chardonnay and pinot noir, he’s not so quietly a huge fan of Claret. Indeed, as I texted him for some extra information about a wine this evening, he’s ‘just flat out enjoying my morels with a Margaux!’. A doff of the cap in the direction of elbow-patch blazers and chinos with the pink wax seal on this wine, a fitting colour for a cravat or pocket square to go alongside a nice club tie and that blazer. “I have a distinct soft spot for the Cabernet wines produced in the 70’s and 80’s by the pioneering wineries of Central and Western Victoria, many of which seem ageless even now”, says Josh. Exciting news as three new wines of Claret-esque nature will emerge from 2021, including one from Balgownie old vines, which is additionally thrilling for trainspotters.
This is right on the money, luncheon Claret in essence. Evocative, blue fruit, lavender, eucalyptus and mahogany scents, succulent texture yet plush and medium weight too. More cassis to taste, chocolate, cherry, mint/eucalyptus faintly and hazelnut savouriness in tow. Tannins swish softly and yet then with gentle authority, finishing the wine with light chews and chomps amongst fresh, leafy acidity. This is fantastic.
