DJP Curullon Mencia 2010
galicia,
spain
$140
One of my very favourite wines from Bierzo and Spain in general. This is delcious from start to finish. Richer and more pronounced than previous vintages, with layers of sour cherry, mountain herbs, small-goods (jamon/prosuitto) and loads of wild berries. This is fruit from predominately the San Martin vineyard (which was previously a single bottling). A silky smooth palate, that is layered and fruit rich before a fine, juicy finish. This is a benchmark wine for the variety and the region at large. As a vintage, 2010 was difficult insofar as being made up of a wet winter and a hot, dry summer. Riccardo Palacios, though, has only enhanced his reputation as one of the winemakers to watch on a global stage. A 2001 Corullon was tasted next to the 2010 and showed all hallmarks of a fine Burgundy or Barbera. Highly recommended. - Todd Slater, FWC.
